Is the 7mm Rem Mag suitable for hunting dangerous game?

For black bear, yes – the 160–175gr loads with quality bonded bullets penetrate adequately and deliver sufficient energy for clean kills. For grizzly and brown bear, the 7mm Rem Mag is used successfully by experienced hunters but sits at the lower end of the practical range – most Alaska guides prefer .300 Win Mag minimum and ideally larger for backup bear rifles. For dangerous game where stopping power at close range is the primary consideration (cape buffalo, hippo), the 7mm Rem Mag is not appropriate and the .375 H&H or larger is the standard. The 7mm Rem Mag is a superb hunting cartridge for North American big game up to and including elk; it is not a dangerous game cartridge.

What scope power is best for the 7mm Rem Mag?

For western hunting at 100–500 yards, a 3–15x or 4–16x scope with a zero-stop and exposed turrets handles the full effective range comfortably. For dedicated long-range work extending to 700+ yards, a 5–25x with first focal plane reticle and exposed elevation turret is the appropriate step up. Most 7mm Rem Mag hunters use 3–12x or 3–15x scopes that balance the zoom needed for distant shots with the wide field of view useful for close shots in broken terrain.
